Our Innovation Analysts recently looked into emerging technologies and up-and-coming startups working on solutions for Smart Cities. As there is a large number of startups working on a wide variety of solutions, we decided to share our insights with you. This time, we are taking a look at 4 promising Smart Street solutions.
Heat Map: 5 Top Smart Street Solutions
For our 4 top picks, we used a data-driven startup scouting approach to identify the most relevant solutions globally. The Global Startup Heat Map below highlights 5 interesting examples out of 684 relevant solutions. Depending on your specific needs, your top picks might look entirely different.
Osiris Systems – Smart Street Lighting
Street lighting, that automatically adapts to the time of day and user presence cuts down costs and ensures real-time demand-based energy consumption, compared to traditional schedule-based lighting planning. Indian Osiris Systems develops smart street lights, equipped with infrared presence and ambient light sensors for automatic brightness and dimming. The lights are connected to a network for failure monitoring and manual operation.
Include – Smart Street Furniture
Smart urban street furniture, such as benches, bus stops, or bike stations provide citizens with device charging points, internet access and collect data about pedestrian traffic and use of public facilities. The Croatian startup Include produces smart weather- and vandal-resistant benches, covered with solar panels. USB ports and wireless chargers are available for users’ devices. Sensors gather data about air parameters, bench usage, and system status. Data from the sensors, such as the number of charged devices, or air temperature is available to the bench owners via a dashboard.
Momentum Dynamics – Wireless Vehicle Charger
Automated wireless charging is an alternative to plug-in charging and caters to charging the batteries of various electric vehicles, allowing for an extension of the driving range. Buses can be charged at stops in order to eliminate impact on their route schedule, for example. The US-based company Momentum Dynamics creates an inductive charger which enables different classes of electric vehicles to be charged without supervision and under different weather conditions, as the device transmits electrical energy through air, water, and ice.
Aco Recycling – Street Underground Waste Containers
Underground waste containers, with their reduced exterior volume, save street space in cities, reduce visual pollution and optimize collection costs because trucks collect garbage, only when level sensors signalize that a container is full. Aco Recycling, from Turkey, produces underground waste containers, which prevent garbage liquids from leaking. Further, a remote control system allows the garbage truck driver to manipulate the containers directly from the truck.
