Our Innovation Analysts recently looked into emerging technologies and up-and-coming startups in the mobility industry. As there is a large number of startups working on a wide variety of solutions, we decided to share our insights with you. So, let’s take a look at promising autonomous vehicle solutions.
Heat Map: 5 Top Autonomous Vehicle Startups
For our 5 picks of autonomous vehicle startups, we used a data-driven startup scouting approach to identify the most relevant solutions globally. The Global Startup Heat Map below highlights 5 interesting examples out of 300 relevant solutions. Depending on your specific needs, your top picks might look entirely different.
Five AI – Connected Mobility
The main task of connected mobility is to complement existing city transport and replace unecological types of vehicles. An example here is the shared mobility concept which can work via Artificial Intelligence (AI) based vehicles for promoting shared transportation services. UK-based startup FiveAI, for example, aims to free cities from traffic by creating a connected platform for transportation that combines AI, engineering and mobility. The startup focuses on creating intelligent perception systems through sensors which is capable to work under different weather conditions.
Drive.ai – Pedestrian Safety
The use of autonomous vehicles leads to the enhanced passenger and pedestrian safety thanks to accurate sensor usage, software, AI, and creating real-time 3D mapping of the surrounding area. US startup Drive.ai displays messages on screens dedicated to pedestrians safety and thereby informs them that a vehicle waits until the pedestrian safely crossed the road.
DeepmapAI – Navigation & Mapping
As autonomous cars virtually see the road, they need to be equipped with a combination of localization and mapping components such as real-time mapping services, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms, prior maps and others that are based on different technologies. For example, the US startup DeepmapAI works on a high-definition mapping service for autonomous driving. This service enables centimeter-level real-time localization for various road types and driving conditions and creates a 3D environment with LiDAR intensity and RGB value data for simulation tools.
EasyMile – First & Last Mile Journey
This type of journey relates to transporting passengers to private sites, urban, suburban or rural areas including sports locations, community public places, or corporate campuses. French startup EasyMile, for instance, creates a driverless shuttle which can transport up to 15 passengers to fixed or on-demand areas offering local mobility within a city center or community campuses.
Nuro – Local Deliveries
Local deliveries through autonomous vehicles provide convenient goods transportation by optimizing the free space within a car and automatically informing people about their delivery’s arrival through an app. US startup Nuro combines robotics and artificial intelligence, enabling a vehicle to understand traffic lights and identify people and cars in multiple traffic conditions to adjust the further driving scheme.
