ICON Photonics – High-Speed Optical Communication
Optoelectronics are electronic devices that emit or detect light, most commonly for applications in telecommunication. Advances in optoelectronics enable communication between devices, infrastructure, and enterprises in the information technology (IT) sector. Startups are developing optical technologies to enable high-speed short-distance communication solutions.
French startup ICON Photonics develops solutions for high-speed optical communication. With the help of a monolithic on-chip layer that enables high-performance optical coupling and packaging, the startup increases tolerance to optical misalignment, as well as vibrations and temperature. This solution serves multiple applications in telecommunication, quantum communications, and light fidelity (Li-Fi).
Adolite – On-Board Optics
On-board optics and co-packaged optics play a major role in building datacenter networks to meet the increasing demand for cloud-based solutions. Additionally, on-board optics enable faster deployments and reliable installation of hyper-scale data centers.
The US-based startup Adolite offers onboard optics for telecommunication. By replacing embedded fiber with polymer, the startup’s proprietary process delivers on-board optics up to 400 gigabits per second (GB/s). The solution enables infrastructure upgrades for bandwidth-intensive and latency-sensitive applications.
Transcelestial – Laser Communication
For many communication needs, particularly in satellite communication, the immediate transfer of information over large distances is crucial. Laser communication meets this need with little loss of information. The technology depends on the fact that light waves pack much more information and travel faster than radio waves. Startups are developing workarounds for the requirement for a direct line of sight for laser communication.
Singapore-based startup Transcelestial is working on a space data network for terrestrial and satellite telecom applications. CENTAURI uses ultra-high bandwidth wireless laser communication to provide connectivity at a low cost. The startup creates a distribution network that connects cell towers and physical infrastructure. Other than telecom, the solution serves communication needs in enterprise, logistics, and FinTech.
Tethir – Optical Wireless
Wireless communication is now a near-ubiquitous feature of communication systems. However, as broadband wireless uses the radio frequency spectrum, the congestion of the spectrum poses a challenge, due to the growing number of subscribers. Optical wireless utilizes visible or infrared light waves to provide both short-range and long-range wireless.
British startup Tethir uses its expertise in optoelectronics to deliver optical wireless communication. The startup’s optics enables transceivers that are a fraction of the size of current systems making wireless communication through windows possible. The technology creates a wide field of view that allows high bandwidth applications for providing internet in trains and connected autonomous vehicles.
Roshmere – Next-Gen Optical Transport
Optical transport networking is a popular protocol in the intercommunication industry. It allows service providers to multiplex different services in optical light paths. This allows lower cost, higher performance, and enhanced spectral efficiency. Solutions that enable deployment of high data rates are expanding applications of optical transport.
The US-based startup Roshmere is developing optical transport solutions based on its highly stable coherent light source. The startup utilizes optical carrier sources, photonic integrated circuits (IC), and digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms to provide ultra-high data rates with significantly lower power consumption. The solution finds applications in data centers, metro networks, and long-haul networks.
