Our Innovation Analysts recently looked into emerging technologies and up-and-coming startups working on solutions for the energy industry. As there is a large number of startups working on a wide variety of solutions, we decided to share our insights with you. This time, we are taking a look at 5 promising Smart Appliance Solutions.
Heat Map: 5 Top Smart Appliance Solutions
For our 5 top picks, we used a data-driven startup scouting approach to identify the most relevant solutions globally. The Global Startup Heat Map below highlights 5 interesting examples out of 412 relevant solutions. Depending on your specific needs, your top picks might look entirely different.
Ween – Smart Thermostats
Compared to conventional programmable thermostats, smart ones help consumers achieve higher energy efficiency by automatically adjusting to various internal and external conditions, as well as monitoring and displaying real-time energy data. Smart thermostats utilize Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to constantly replicate human usage patterns. French startup Ween produces connected autonomous thermostats powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and ML. The solution takes into account the energy consumption patterns of all members of a household, monitors weather data and gradually manipulates temperature settings based on human activity to ensure a level of comfort. Via a mobile app, users can control it remotely, too.
Peeeks – Smart Boilers
Traditional gas and water-based boilers constitute a big part of household energy consumption. Shifting to smart boilers can have many advantages including lower electricity bills and higher energy efficiency. In addition, smart boilers conduct predictive maintenance through reporting faults, setting timers, remote controls, and actual energy savings calculations. Peeeks from the Netherlands manufactures water-based electric smart boiler modules. Their solution is an intelligent on-demand pre-heating management device, with remote controls for steering and monitoring boilers, connected to the management platform using Global System for Mobile (GSM) controllers. The main purpose of these smart boilers is to reduce radiant heat loss and increase energy savings.
Ambi Labs – Smart Heat, Ventilation & Air Conditioning
Smart systems for Heat, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) focus on solving the problem of sustaining a balance between thermal regulations and airflow in a building. It connects all vents and air conditioners to the cloud with the use of the Internet of Things (IoT) and air quality sensors for continuous remote HVAC management. These systems have the ability to self-learn optimal conditions for airflow and cost-saving. Hong Kong-based Ambi Labs develops Ambi Climate, an air conditioning gadget, enhanced with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and built-in sensors. It identifies and analyzes temperature, humidity, weather, and sunlight factors. It can capture users’ feedback to meet their metabolic cycles and attain airflow comfort. It also enables various options for voice control and smart integration for the home.
iGlass Technology – Smart Windows
A popular innovation is exciting everyone involved in the real estate industry: smart windows. By mounting or retrofitting smart windows, temperature, lighting, and overall energy conditions can be adjusted. This is made possible by the use of smart materials such as electrochromic materials, liquid crystals, reflective hydrides, and smart glass. Intelligent windows automatically regulate a building’s energy-efficiency, light transmission, and thermal responsiveness. The US-American startup iGlass Technology creates Wisp Tunable Sunlight Control: digital blinds and electrochromic secondary glazing units to transform standard windows into smart ones. This IoT-based product operates at a low voltage and allows for dim-to-tint flexibility to regulate air and energy balance.
BOSS Controls – Smart Plug Load Controllers
Smart plug load controllers tackle the issue of idle energy consumption in offices and homes when they are vacant or empty, but remain connected to power sockets. Such controllers reduce a building’s power consumption by automating and monitoring the use of appliances and electronics based on human activity, time, and system-based sensors. The US-based startup BOSS Controls develops a cloud-based platform named Atmospheres and manufactures controllable smart plugs for 120 and 220 voltage loads with enhanced appliance protection. Their solution aims at creating a virtual ecosystem of controllers, sensors, web and mobile interfaces for monitoring loads and reduction in idle energy usage.
